Cambridge's Alverstone Club - named after Viscount Alverstone who won his Blue at Cambridge as F.R. Webster and went on to become Lord Chief Justice - was founded in 1920. In the Achilles publication "Modern Athletics" W.R. Milligan recalls that the Oxford Centipedes were founded a few years later : "The name" claims Milligan "was conceived by Bevil Rudd at his usual hour of 3 a.m. - Fifty members and one hundred feet". Both Clubs set qualifying standards from an early date. Since 1971 the Centipedes/Alverstone Match has been held in conjunction with the 'Varsity Match.

A.k.a Women's Second Team Varsity Match

Since 1987 Women's 2nd Team matches have been held in conjunction with the 'Varsity Match. Oxford's Millipedes found their name obviously enough. Cambridge's Alligators derived theirs from their founder(Allison O'Neill - the first lady President of either CUAC or OUAC). Results in the first two years have been:
